The majority of Unwritten’s haircare range is silicone-free. In fact, only one product contains silicones — the So Sublime Hydro Repair Serum.
Why So Sublime Includes Silicones
While Unwritten focuses on formulating high-performance products without silicones, So Sublime is a deliberate exception. A blend of three water-soluble silicones was included to enhance the product’s performance and versatility.
This formulation allows So Sublime to be used on both damp and dry hair prior to heat styling. It provides heat protection up to approximately 230°C, the temperature at which silicones begin to break down and lose their protective benefits.
Key Ingredients for Heat Protection
The following ingredients work together to deliver heat protection and conditioning benefits:
- Dimethicone – A water-soluble silicone that creates a light barrier on the hair shaft, helping to protect against heat damage.
- PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone – Helps to add shine and moisture while offering heat protection, leaving the hair looking healthier.
- Disodium PEG-12 Dimethicone Sulfosuccinate – Conditions the hair, making it more manageable and helping to reduce frizz.
Backed by Research
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science found that hair treated with dimethicone before heat styling was less damaged than untreated hair.
Other Styling Products with Heat Protection
Unwritten’s other styling products — Oh High! and Hey Genie! — are also formulated to provide heat protection, using non-silicone-based ingredients that are equally effective.
