From 1 October 2026, it will be illegal in Australia for a business to charge its customers’ a surcharge to cover credit card processing fees. Here’s what it means for your business – and what you can do now.
If you’ve been using HUSL’s ‘Pass fees to customers’ feature, this is one little business update you definitely don’t want to scroll past.
From 1 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) across designated card networks are introducing a ban on credit card surcharges. This means that businesses will no longer be able to pass a separate card payment surcharge on to customers for these card payments. The changes apply to both consumer and business card payments.
In order to address this new regulation, HUSL will disable the automatic card surcharge feature from 30 September 2026.
So, What Happens To Your Card Fees?
The important thing is: your card processing costs aren’t disappearing – the way you recover them is changing.
Instead of adding a separate card surcharge at checkout, businesses can consider building their payment acceptance costs into their overall service and product prices. The RBA and ACCC both recognise incorporating these costs into your general pricing as an option.
For example, Stripe is integrated into the HUSL app for card payments, and their surcharge is 1.75% + 30c per transaction; we recommend adding 2% across your services and products as a starting point.
You will find that a small overall price adjustment is all you need to keep your numbers healthy.
